Low Water - River Aire

Mitre Angling Club controls about one mile of fishing on the River Aire at Carleton, near Skipton. The source of the River Aire is Malham Tarn, high in the Yorkshire Dales. Malham Tarn sits on limestone and the infant river flows through limestone on its way to the foot of Malham Cover where it emerges and the river truly starts.

This limestone at the river's source gives the River Aire a head start by raising the pH, making the river prolific in fly-life... leading to the river's reputation for big trout, some reaching specimen proportions! They are not easily fooled though! The best time to encounter a big River Aire trout is during May and June when the Mayfly are hatching. This once a year feast of big flies brings the big trout out and onto the feed.

Mitre Angling club's stretch is a very varied piece of river, with fast, shallow, runs and deep pools in incised meanders. There are good numbers of Brown Trout and Grayling as well as some significant coarse fish, particularly Chub and Pike.

As with all Mitre Angling Club's rivers, there are no day tickets available, it is strictly members and their guests only.
